How to Play PlayBubbles

PlayBubbles is a type of matching puzzle game called bubble shooter, which is a casual game with similar mechanics to other casual games like marble shooters and match-3 puzzles. The concept of bubble shooter is said to be the clone of a game called Puzzle Bobble, which was initially released in 1994. The goal in a bubble shooter game is to pop all the bubbles that are shown at the top of the screen by firing bubbles at them from below. The bubbles are popped when they are linked together to form at least three identical bubbles in a group.

PlayBubbles Game Rules

When a game of bubble shooter begins, you will see a few rows of bubbles occupying the space above the playing field. Right below that is your “bubble cannon”, which can be moved to adjust the aim and fires the bubble that is currently loaded.

By shooting the bubbles to the top, players can aim to match bubbles of the same type. Special power-up bubbles aside, you will need at least three of the same type of bubbles to do so. You can stack different types of bubbles below each other, but they will not be popped. You will need to pop the bubbles below before you can reach the ones above. It is important to note that the bubbles will start moving downwards after you take a specific number of shots. If the bubbles reach the bottom, it is game over.

To win a game of bubble shooter, players are required to match and pop all the bubbles on the board until none are left. Your score will be shown below, and is calculated based on how long it took to complete the level, along with the total shots you took.

PlayBubbles FAQ

Is every game of PlayBubbles winnable?

Yes, every game is winnable. However, similar to mahjong games, the chances you'll win will gradually drop if you make any wrong moves or matches, since you only have a limited number of bubbles to use. Strategize and create a path for how you want to clear the bubbles, and victory should be yours.

When was the original bubble shooter created?

The game was originally a clone of a 1994 game called Puzzle Bobble. Puzzle Bobble was a puzzle arcade game that was developed and published by Taito, and was based on an existing title then known as Bubble Bobble (1986). As such, the same cute Japanese animated cartoon characters and music were featured in both games, and with its success, brought about several more sequels and ports to various gaming systems.

The bubble shooter game is owned by Ilyon Dynamics after they were bought by Absolutist, and was initially released in 2002. In 2010 and 2012 respectively, the bubble shooter game was ported to both the IOS and Android platforms.

Does playing PlayBubbles benefit your brain?

Yes, playing bubble shooter can benefit your brain in many ways. We have talked about some of the factors in our article, Why Playing Bubble Shooter is Good for Your Brain and Mood, which includes stress relief, focus training, and improving pattern recognition.

How is Bubble Shooter different from Marble Shooter?

The main difference between the two games is that bubble shooter has a “static” playing field where the bubbles remain at the top of the screen, whereas in marble shooter, the marbles are constantly on the move around the playing field. For bubble shooter, you can “bounce” bubbles off the wall to do a trick shot and land in usually unreachable gaps or spots, whereas for marble shooter, you are unable to bounce the marbles off the walls, and need to wait for an opening or move fast if you want to reach the marbles at the back.

Is there a difficulty curve in Bubble Shooter games?

Yes. Some bubble shooter games have a time limit on top of having the bubbles fall after shooting a certain number of bubbles. This creates pressure on the player to want to quickly pop all the bubbles before time runs out. Another form of difficulty is that the number of shots you can make is limited. This forces players to strategize to find the optimal path to clear the bubbles before they run out of shots. Other than that, the main difficulty of bubble shooting is the players themselves wanting to challenge themselves to get an even better score.

Do bubble shooters come in different themes?

Yes, they do! Some themes include fruits, candies, magic, pirates, underwater, Vikings, and more.

Are there any interesting trivia on bubble shooter?

Well, fun fact: The original bubble shooter, Puzzle Bobble or Bubble Bobble, which was released in Japan, was known internationally as Bust-A-Move - the same name as a popular rap song from the late 1980s by the rapper, Young MC.

Are there games that are very similar in gameplay to bubble shooters?

Yes, there are. The most common are marble shooters, brick breakers, and, surprisingly enough, match-3 games.

Marble shooter - Has the same rule of matching three identical marbles to “pop” them and must remove all marbles to win a level. The difference is that the marbles are constantly on the move on a specific path around the playing field, and your goal is to stop them from reaching their final destination.

Brick breaker - It differs from a bubble shooter in the sense that it doesn't have the usual "matching identical pieces" gameplay, but instead, it's similar in the shooting mechanics - you can "shoot" a ball bearing into the playing field and bounce it around, smashing all the bricks before they can reach the bottom.

Match-3 game - This kind of game is similar to bubble shooters because they are all based on matching mechanics, where you match up at least three of the same type of items, be it bubbles or candies. Some timed match-3 games have the same "don't let the items reach the bottom of the board" gameplay rule as well. However, unlike bubble shooters, no shooting is needed in a match-3 game.

Get popping in PlayBubbles! Bright bubbles are filling the sky- aim, shoot, and match them to clear the board. No ticking clock, just pure bubble-matching fun. How many can you pop?
